The Hack-a-thon track is a three- day experience where participants will create dynamic solutions to a designated challenge. The aim is to spark civic innovation and to help our local talent gain visibility in the community.

Challenge prompt: how might we best respond to growth in Colorado Springs? Each solution must be an original idea that incorporates one or more of the following criteria: neighborhood-level planning, going green, or cultural awareness.

This is an opportunity to join an immersive and interdisciplinary experience in creative problem-solving. Over the course of three days, this FREE event will take participants through understanding the root problem, exploring best practices, and developing a strong solution. In partnership with the City of Colorado Springs, the City's Open Data initiative will provide context and guidance to help frame the challenge and tools to develop solutions. The Peak Startup facilitators will guide participants to develop and refine their ideas through design-thinking workshops. Experienced mentors will join throughout the week, providing wisdom and handy tips and tricks along the way. Participating in the hack-a-thon track will provide you with new connections to important networks and skills that will help you down the road.

The hack-a-thon will conclude on Thursday 9/12 with a science-fair style presentation of concepts as part of the Pitch Night Competition. The “judges pick” and the “community favorite”.

Track overview:
Workshops will kick off at 1pm on Tuesday, September 10th. We’ll kick off with a short design thinking experience, participants will be briefed on the week’s challenge, and teams will be formed. An expert will provide guidance regarding the open data sets and case studies to best understand the root issue. Attendees will close out the night knowing the specific problem they want to tackle.

Wednesday morning will begin with an energizing ideation workshop, where attendees will brainstorm ideas to solve their problem. Teams will be formed before digging into lunch and with the help of the mentors, these teams will decide on one idea to develop moving forward. In the afternoon, teams are given time to test and iterate their ideas, building and speaking with local users.

On Thursday, teams will refine their ideas. Following lunch, a pitch workshop will be offered to prepare teams for presenting that evening in front of the judges. By 5:30pm, happy hour will be underway and so will the pitches!
